Two Years and Counting

Two Years and Counting

A Brief Look Back at PC’s Path, and Where We’re Headed from Here!

July 12th, 2025 marks Pacific Composting’s 2 year anniversary, and the approach of this special milestone has provided us with a good opportunity to reflect on our progress, and to look forward to our exciting future plans!

Although officially launched in summer of 2023, the PC journey began more than 6 years ago for our founder, Andrea Blum. It was her time as a student at Gaia College that planted the original seed, and in fact, it was one of her class assignments that became the original Pacific Composting business plan! The next 2+ years served as a critical period of preparation for what was to come. Andrea spent this time working closely with multiple experts in the composting field (including one who is still part of the PC team), tirelessly testing systems, studying different methods, and refining her overall gameplan.

While some of the original goals were modified or replaced with new ones prior to launch, and even with the continuing evolution of the venture since that time, Andrea has always wanted to make composting more interesting, accessible and fun! Naturally, education and support have played a very important role in fulfilling this aim.

The importance of education in our overall mission has only increased in the last 2 years. It’s now truly at the heart of everything we do!

We’ve put considerable time and effort into building a foundation of extensive online content - including articles, FAQs, helpful videos, and  guides - all designed to demystify the topic of composting, and to help people choose the right systems and approaches to best suit their needs, experience and overall situation.

Largely thanks to the guidance and efforts of our very own “Microbe Whisperer”, Amy-Luck MacGregor, we’ve been developing important educational resources relating to the “Soil Food Web” (SFW) as well, not the least of which is our “KidZone”, where kids and adults alike can learn about the amazing soil and compost ecosystem! We even have downloadable colouring pages, introducing "soil superheroes" like protozoa and nematodes (among others) that play such a vital role in nutrient-cycling and decomposition.

Support - one of the 3 PC pillars - is also an important part of our education-centric focus. From the very beginning, we’ve gone above and beyond in our efforts to support the needs of our followers and customer base - practically begging at times for people to reach out with any and all questions they might have. (Please do!) 😂

We know that providing quality products is really only one piece of a bigger puzzle. It is the quality information and support that’s going to be the ultimate key to success, especially for those just starting their composting journey.

The Next Chapter: Expanding Our Impact

Looking ahead, Pacific Composting is excited to embark on a new phase of development, further deepening our commitment to education and community engagement:

Developing a School Curriculum

We hope to ignite curiosity and nurture a love for soil health in younger generations through multiple educational initiatives. Our "KidZone" and various other small projects, like educational posters, have provided us with a good starting place, and later this year we are aiming to roll out a full school composting curriculum, along with new products that help to support the learning process.

Preparing for In-Person Workshops

We are actively working to finalize the infrastructure at our 14 acre Cowichan Valley farm, so we can start welcoming people on-site for hands-on, in-person workshops and demonstrations. This will allow us to directly share our expertise, provide practical learning experiences, and establish even more of a personal connection with people in the composting community!

Hands-On Learning in Our Food Forest and Compost Education Zone

A key part of our future vision includes a "food forest/living classroom" that will showcase a unique, long-term food production system, and demonstrate the benefits of applying compost and compost extracts. The tireless work of PC’s permaculture expert, Raine (Sierra) Robinson along with support from local businesses - like Rain Bird Irrigation, who has generously donated a substantial amount of equipment and labour for the food forest’s irrigation needs - has greatly helped to move the project towards being “visitor-ready”.

Our dedicated Compost Education Zone, featuring many different systems and strategies, will also provide immersive, hands-on learning opportunities. Visitors will be introduced to a wide range of composting methods, and see firsthand how organic wastes are being transformed into rich, beneficial soil amendments!

These are just a few of the exciting PC developments starting to take shape! Be sure to keep an eye on our News section (and social media channels) for more updates as they are announced.

As our resident “Worm Guru”, Bentley, is fond of pointing out on team calls:

PC has come a long way, but we’re still only just getting started!

We are incredibly grateful for your interest and encouragement on this journey so far. We can’t wait to empower even more people to create compost that supports living soils in the months and years to come!

We hope you’ll join us as we continue to move forward in this exciting next phase of growth and learning.
