Worm Boost

Enhancing the Health & Habitat of Your Worms!

Here at Pacific Composting, we tend to be a wee bit obsessed with taking really good care of our (Red Wiggler) composting worms! In fact, if you were to look back at Andrea’s original business plan, you’d see that “health of the worms” was one of the big areas of focus she wanted to zone in on and promote. Not too surprisingly, this simple (but important) idea has ended up infused into all our farm practices and educational content relating to composting worms.

When you take excellent care of the worms - and the vermicomposting ecosystem as a whole - the process itself is going to operate that much more effectively!

With all this in mind, we’ve been planning to create specialized vermicomposting amendments; products designed to help vermicomposters improve the health of their systems, and achieve a more effective process overall.

Looking around at what others were doing, we realized that most “worm chows” on the market are:

  • Designed primarily to grow fatter worms.
  • Recommended as a main food source.
  • Almost entirely made of protein-rich ingredients and fillers.
  • Rarely (if ever) designed to balance/enhance the overall habitat and ecosystem.
  • Just generally, NOT ideally suited for the average vermicomposter.

We knew from the start that we wanted to do things differently - and that’s why we came up with PC Worm Boost!

Simply put, Worm Boost is a vermicomposting system supplement designed to enhance both the health of the worms and that of the ecosystem as a whole.

Instead of basically just tossing some form of animal feed in a bag and calling it a day, we painstakingly hand-picked all our different ingredients. There were literally weeks at a time where we were focused on one or two components, and we weren’t shy about rejecting some along the way.

Testing has naturally been a key part of the process as well. We’ve wanted to make sure Worm Boost meets or exceeds the standards we set for ourselves when we began this journey. Before our official launch, we made an effort to get the product into the hands of as many vermicomposters as possible so as to get some valuable “real world” feedback and (hopefully) gain insights into how we can continue to improve this supplement.

Boost Basics

  • Worm Boost contains protein-rich ingredients combined with various natural “browns” (carbon-rich materials) and minerals.
  • It’s intended to be used as a system supplement, not as a primary food.
  • The aim is to boost worm nutrition and microbial diversity, while helping to balance C:N and pH in a worm composting system.

How to Use Worm Boost

Worm Boost should be lightly sprinkled in during the system set-up process, as well as any time you feed your worms.

It should be added in very thin layers, or incorporated directly into your food mixes. We recommend adding it dry since this will offer more of a slow-release benefit.

Worm Bin Set-Up

As you add your different system layers when first setting up your system, sprinkling in a little Worm Boost as you go can help to kickstart your ecosystem. A few tablespoons, evenly distributed throughout the system should do the trick.

Feeding

Anytime you add a deposit of food to your system (always remember to err on the side of moderation with feeding), you can sprinkle in a little Worm Boost over top. How much you  should add will depend on a range of factors including the size of your system, but a tablespoon of Worm Boost with every feed in a typical home worm bin should be a good starting place.

NOTE: Similar to regular foods, it’s important to cover your Worm Boost deposits with safe habitat materials like bedding and/or living material.

Storage

Be sure to store your Worm Boost in a dry location. For best results (especially longer-term storage), transfer it into some form of sealable container.

FAQ

Can I add “too much” Worm Boost?

As balanced as this product is, it is still rich in nutrition - so there is always the possibility of adding too much. If used as a system supplement (as recommended), sprinkled here and there during set up and feeding, you shouldn’t encounter any issues.

Can I use Worm Boost as my only food?

Technically, Worm Boost could likely meet all the nutritional needs of your worms (and system as a whole), but it wasn’t designed to be used that way. We feel that it is much better suited as a supplement for a more typical vermicomposting process (with a regular waste stream like kitchen scraps).

My Worm Boost seems to be growing mold - is this a problem?

Worm Boost is rich in nutrients, so rapid microbial colonization (including fungi) is very normal. Make sure you aren’t adding more than a thin layer in any one location, and also make sure all deposits are covered with loose bedding and/or other safe habitat materials. Worms are talented at taking care of fungal outbreaks, so it’s likely not something to be concerned about (unless the system has been seriously overfed).

Can I Add Worm Boost to My Backyard Composter?

Absolutely. Worm Boost was designed primarily as a supplement for small to medium scale home vermicomposting systems, but it could also be used to help boost microbial activity in a more typical backyard system (and support the health of composting worms if you have them). The same guidelines apply - i.e. sprinkling in thin layers over regular food deposits - but the total amounts should be increased accordingly.

Can Worm Boost Be Added to My Bokashi Bucket?

We don’t recommend using it for the first phase of the bokashi process (really not needed, or particularly beneficial). During the phase II (aerobic decomposition) process, mixing in some Worm Boost - ideally, along with bedding and living materials - could offer some benefits. Apart from the carbon-rich materials, it also contains buffering components which can help to neutralize some of the acidity of the bokashi pre-compost.

Do You Sell Worm Boost in Bulk?

We don’t at this time, but this is definitely something we may consider in the future!

Where Are We Headed with Worm Boost?

The Worm Boost journey is only just beginning, and we are thrilled to be bringing our first version of this product to the market (fall 2025)!

Shorter-Term Goals

  • Get Worm Boost in the hands of even more vermicomposters, and continue paying close attention to feedback.
  • Continue testing the product in our own systems.

Longer-Term Goals

  • Based on testing and feedback, further refine the Worm Boost recipe.
  • Launch other types of Worm Boost and related amendments

Stay tuned for more Worm Boost news and updates, and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions/comments/suggestions!
